Nightline Nightline broadcasts recently discovered audio diaries of Louis Armstrong; Armstrong would routinely record his thoughts - including his anger over racism, his feelings about his career, and conversations with friends - in an audio diary that has only recently been discovered; while his public image was one of a smiling, upbeat jazz musician, the tapes document his incredible anger over the way he was treated by the music and film industries and the racism he saw in everyday life; Armstrong began making the recordings in the 1940's and continued to record his thoughts and conversations with friends until his death in 1971; Chicago Tribune arts critic Howard Reich first reported the existence of the tapes and will be interviewed for the program, along with Armstrong's former record producer, George Avakian, the director of the Louis Armstrong archives, Michael Cogswell, and longtime Armstrong neighbor Selma Herlado
