7:00 pm A&E Biography: Jimmy Swaggart - Fire and Brimstone Jimmy Swaggart was one of the most popular and charismatic preachers in modern history; this profile reveals how this son of a sharecropper helped to bring Pentecostalism from the backwaters of the South to international acceptance; Swaggart was born in the small town of Ferriday, Louisiana in 1935; His father was an itinerant preacher and at age 8 Jimmy was "possessed" by the Holy Spirit; He convulsed, spoke in tongues and prophesied the future; As he grew older, Jimmy began spending more time with his soon-to-be-famous cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley; In 1952, Jimmy met 14-year-old Frances Anderson; The two fell in love and were soon married; The newlyweds attended a tent revival by Oral Roberts, and Jimmy decided to become the first singing preacher; He moved to Baton Rouge and quickly built up a recording career and a radio following; By 1973, Jimmy was making $3 million a year; By the end of the '70s, he was heard on more than 650 radio stations and seen by thousands in tent revivals across the nation; Jimmy's ministry grew even more quickly in the '80s; He built his own TV production center and bible college; He had a private jet, a fleet of luxury cars, and a $2.5-million estate; His ministry reached as far as Brazil, China, and South Africa; He began to expose the "wrong-doings" of other tele-evangelists; Among his targets were Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker; 2 years later, photos were taken of Jimmy and a prostitute in New Orleans; Jimmy addressed his congregation with a tearful confession, but in 1992 he was caught again.
