On This Day in Louisiana Music History - May 20

1900 Early Cajun accordionist Angelas LeJeune (also Angelais LeJeune) was born in Church Point, LA on May 20, 1900 (or May 21, 1899). He was a popular entertainer at house dances in the 1920's. LeJeune won a state-wide accordian contest held in Opelousas in 1929, accompanied by Dennis McGee and Ernest Fruge. This trio recorded together in New Orleans in 1929. He was the uncle of noted accordionist Iry Lejeune. LeJeune passed away on June 12, 1974. Read more here.
1959 Singer, songwriter and longtime New Orleans resident Susan Cowsill was born (Susan Claire Cowsill) in Canton, Ohio on May 20, 1959. Susan was a member of the popular 1960's family band The Cowsills. She later played with the Continental Drifters, and also performed in the duo, Psycho Sisters, with Drifters bandmate and former Bangle Vicki Peterson. Susan can be heard providing vocals (and songs) on recordings by Dwight Twilley, Hootie & the Blowfish, The Radiators, Zachary Richard, and many others. See Susan's Facebook page.

1977 Shreveport born blues guitarist Lafayette Thomas passed away in Brisbane, CA in 1977 at age 48. Thomas (aka The Thing, aka L.J. Thomas) worked with Jimmy McCracklin, Little Brother Montgomery, Memphis Slim, and others. His uncle was Shreveport bluesman Jesse "Babyface" Thomas. Read more here. 1978 "After All the Good Is Gone" by Johnny Adams entered the Billboard R&B Chart on this day in 1978. It was a cover of Conway Twitty's 1976 #1 hit.

1998 Harry Connick, Jr. appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell show on May 20, 1998. Harry was there to promote the film "Hope Floats" with costars Sandra Bullock and Mae Whitman, and director Forest Whitaker.
2000 The 504 Boyz album "Goodfellas" debuted at #1 on the Billboard R&B Chart and #2 on the Pop Chart in 2000. The album featured No Limit Records rappers Master P, Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, Mac, Mystikal and Krazy.

2000 Opelousas, Louisiana celebrated it's designation as "Zydeco Music Capital of the World" on May 20, 2000. The street party included performances by Opelousas bands Lil' Pookie & The Zydeco Heartbreakers and Zydeco Force.
