Trumpeter, bandleader and promoter Don Albert (née Albert Anité Dominique) was born in New Orleans on August 5, 1908. Albert was the nephew of trumpeter Natty Dominique. He played locally before moving to Texas in 1927. He worked with Troy Floyd's Orchestra before leading his own groups (Don Albert and His Ten Pals, the Don Albert Orchestra). In the 40's, he opened The Keyhole Club, an integrated nightclub in San Antonio. Albert continued to play with other bands in later years, and he played at the 1969 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He passed away in San Antonio, Texas on March 4, 1980. New Orleans piano great Isadore "Tuts" Washington collapsed and died while performing at the 1984 New Orleans World's Fair on August 5, 1984. One of the first "kings" of New Orleans piano, Washington influenced later players such as Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, James Booker, and Dr. John.
