A Louis Armstrong Centennial Celebration

August 2 - 5, 2001

Louisiana State Museum's Old U.S. Mint
Esplanade at the River
New Orleans, Louisiana

It's been 100 years since the birth of a legend who grew to become the "International Ambassador of Jazz" and August 2-5, 2001, his hometown will host the Satchmo SummerFest, a birthday bash to be thrown in classic Big Easy-style honoring the artistry of Louis Armstrong. Michael Cogswell, Director of the Louis Armstrong House and Archives in Queens College, New York, predicts, "Of the dozens of Louis Armstrong centennial observances underway all over the world, the celebration in New Orleans promises to be the most exciting." Held at the U.S. Old Mint in the French Quarter, the Satchmo SummerFest will include an unforgettable music festival, the Louis Armstrong Centennial Conference, intimate seminars, "informances", children's activities, a club crawl, a jazz mass and second-line parade, and much more. It's all in honor of "Ambassador Satch", who elevated jazz to an art form and forever changed the expression of music!
