String bass, banjo and guitar player Eddie Dawson (Edward Joseph Dawson) was born in New Orleans on July 24, 1884. He worked with George Jones's band, Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra, Joe Oliver, Buddy Petit, Kid Rena, Hypolite Charles, Kid Clayton, Albert Jiles, Peter Bocage, and others. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band were musical guests on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" on July 24, 1976. The band (Allan Jaffe, Willie Humphrey, Percy Humphrey, Josiah "Cíe" Frasier, Narvin Kimball, Frank Demond, and Sing Miller) performed "Panama". Watch the video here.
1986
Swamp blues singer, songwriter and musician (guitar, accordion, violin) Clarence Garlow passed away in Beaumont, Texas on July 24, 1986 at age 75. The Welsh, Louisiana native had a hit with, what was possibly the first zydeco recording, "Bon Ton Roula", in 1950 (#7 on the R&B Singles Chart).
