Clarinetist, sax player, and bandleader Joe Darensbourg was born in Baton Rouge, LA on July 9, 1906. Darensbourg studied under Manuel Roque in Baton Rouge and Alphonse Picou in New Orleans. His lengthy career (1920's - 1980's) included stints with Mutt Carey, Kid Ory, Louis Armstrong's All Stars, and dozens of others. See this lengthy interview with Joe Darensbourg by Barry Martyn. Piano player, vocalist, composer, and bandleader Duke Burrell (Alexander "Duke" Burrell) was born in New Orleans on July 9, 1920. Burrell worked with Louis Jordan, Johnny Otis, Barney Bigard, Roy Brown, the Louisiana Shakers, and others. He passed away in Los Angeles on August 5, 1993 at age 73. Funeral services were held for jazz legend Louis Armstrong at Corona Congregational Church in New York on July 9, 1971. Satchmo was laid to rest in Flushing Cemetary in his hometown of Queens, NY.

Lake Charles, Louisiana native Lucinda Williams was named America's Best Songwriter in the feature article. Time said "Wasting few words and sparing no pain, she has composed an extraordinary songbook about the rituals of loving, losing and keeping the faith".
