On This Day in Louisiana Music History - June 5

1953 Principal photography for the film "The Glenn Miller Story" began on June 5, 1953. The film included a cameo by Louis Armstrong. Watch a video clip here.

1957 "Susie Q" by Dale Hawkins was released on June 5, 1957. The track, which also featured guitar legend James Burton, reached #29 on the pop charts. The song returned to the charts eleven years later, covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Read more here and here.

1961 "I Like It Like That" by Chris Kenner entered the Billboard R&B Chart on June 5. 1961. It went on to reach #2 on both the R&B and Pop charts, and was nominated for a Grammy (in the Best Rock & Roll Recording category).

1971 Cajun accordionist Lionel Cormier died of a heart attack on June 5, 1971 at age 58 while playing "Church Point Two-Step" at the Bamboo Club in Lake Charles, LA. 1991 Harry Connick, Jr.'s 1988 album "20" was certified Gold by the RIAA on June 5, 1991. It reached Platinum status on February 28, 1994.
2001 Buddy Guy was the musical guest on CBS TV's "Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn" on June 5, 2001. He performed "Look What All You Got" from his album, "Sweet Tea". Watch the video here.

2006 Bruce Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions Band were the musical guests on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on June 5, 2006. They performed "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?" (New Orleans '06 version). The Boss dedicated the song to "our friends in New Orleans".
