On This Day in Louisiana Music History - May 13

1938 Louis Armstrong & His Orchestra recorded "When the Saints Go Marching In" for Decca Records in New York on May 13, 1938. It was Satchmo's first recording of the spiritual and jazz standard. Backing band members on the track included Luis Russell, Pops Foster (bass) and Paul Barbarin (drums).

1971 Brass band trombonist Revert "Peanut" Andrews was born in New Orleans on May 13, 1971. Revert is a member of the famed Andrews Family of musicians that includes James Andrews, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and Glen David Andrews. He has played with Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Treme Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Glen David Andrews Band, and others. Watch Revert Andrews videos on YouTube.
1981 Noted Cajun accordionist and songwriter Nathan Abshire passed away in Basile, LA on May 13, 1981 at age 67. Abshire first recorded in the early 1930's with the Rayne-Bo Ramblers (led by Leroy "Happy Fats" Leblanc). He was featured in the 1971 Les Blank film "Spend It All", the 1975 PBS special "Good Times Are Killing Me" and the documentary video "Les Blues de Balfa". Read more here and here. 1986 Hank Williams Jr.'s 1985 album "Greatest Hits Volume 2" was certified Gold by the RIAA in May 13, 1986. It reached Platinum status on March 7, 1990.
1992 Allen Toussaint was the musical guest on "Late Night with David Letterman" on May 13, 1992. He sat in with Paul Shaffer and the band, and also performed his song "Happiness", from the 1991 album "The Allen Toussaint Collection". Watch the video here:

2009 The Wynton Marsalis Quintet was the musical guest on "Late Show with David Letterman" on May 13, 2009. They performed "School Boy" from the album "He and She". Watch the video here.
2010 Dr. John sat in with The Roots on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" on May 13, 2010. Other guests included Keith Richards, and musical guest Phish. The episode was part of a week-long celebration of the Rolling Stones' 1972 album "Exile on Main St.". When introduced, Keith Richards walked over to the bandstand to greet Dr. John before sitting down with Fallon. Note: Dr. John performed on the album, with fellow New Orleanians Merry Clayton, Shirley Goodman and Tami Lynn. Watch a video clip here.
