1959 The first Grammy Awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles on May 4, 1959. Winners at the event included Van Cliburn (Best Classical Performance, Instrumental) and Louis Prima & Keely Smith (Best Performance By Vocal Group or Chorus) for "That Old Black Magic".
1976 Noted trombone great and bandleader Big Jim Robinson passed away in New Orleans on May 4, 1976. Robinson worked with Sam Morgan, Kid Rena, Isaiah Morgan, Bunk Johnson, George Lewis, and others. 1999 Members of the rock group Toto, including vocalist and Vinton, Louisiana native Bobby Kimball, added their handprints to the Hollywood RockWalk on May 4, 1999.
2001 The 32nd Annual Dove Awards aired nationally on WGN on May 4, 2001. The event was taped on April 26, 2001 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Aaron Neville was nominated for "Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year" for "Devotion" but lost to Fred Hammond & RFC. Aaron Neville performed "By Heart, By Soul" with Christian vocal quartet Avalon. 2010 Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue were featured in concert on NPR radio show "Mountain Stage" on May 4, 2010. The show was taped February 28, 2010 at Clay Center in Charleston, WV. Listen to the performance here.
