Connick booted the lyrics to "St. James Infirmary," "a song I've been singing since I was 5," he said, but good humor and the solos of Barbarin and trumpeter Leroy Jones made it all OK. ... The New Orleans theme continued with "That's A Plenty," a supercharged traditional jazz number spiced by Barbarin, Jones and Ned Goold's sharp alto saxophone solo... Though the show was a bit short, it illustrated that, in American music, there still are few substitutes for the power and the punch of a charismatic front man and a hot big band. (San Antonio Express-News; 11/14/2003)

From OffBeat magazine's review of "Back To My Roots": Trumpeter Leroy Jones' versatility shines as he swings, strolls and romps on jazz styles that are his native tongue... Jones' trumpet strikes up the ensemble on his own "Hangin' Out with the Band," a traditionally flavored brass band tune that can stand firmly with songs written decades ago... It's rare for composers to add new pages to the traditional jazz songbook and this one deserves a place on the streets and bandstands... Back To My Roots isn't a long journey for Leroy Jones; it is where he lives. However, he constantly redecorates his abode with modern flourishes, his distinctive trumpet and a certain refreshing honesty.... see the OffBeat web site for more.
